The Vietnamese handicraft industry is rich in natural resources, among which rattan stands out. Rattan, a material distinct from wood, is frequently utilized in furniture production. It is a type of forest plant from the palm family and has remained one of the most popular natural materials for crafting handicraft products for many years.
1. Cane Rattan
Cane refers to the layer of rattan just beneath the thorny outer skin, which is removed before the rattan poles are cut, stacked, cleaned, dried, and smoked.
Cane is often used for weaving chair seats and backs due to its flexibility and durability. It is also used as a wrapping material around portions of furniture frames, similar to rope. Cane rattan naturally possesses a shine and does not absorb stain well, which is why many cane chair backs and seats are left in their natural color.
2. Reed Rattan
Reed refers to the inner, wood-like portion of the rattan plant, which is more fibrous and porous compared to the cane layer. Unlike cane, reed is absorbent and can be stained. Decorative embellishments on wicker furniture are often crafted from reed, such as the swirls and curls found on elaborate Victorian-era wicker furniture.
3. Synthetic Rattan
Synthetic rattan is a material engineered to resemble real rattan and is commonly used for outdoor furniture and home decor. It is crafted from polyethylene, hence the 'PE' in its name. Synthetic rattan exhibits superior durability, capable of withstanding moisture and intense sunlight, which could damage natural rattan.
While polyethylene is not the sole material used in synthetic rattan production, it is regarded as more eco-friendly and higher in quality compared to other alternatives.
4. Himalayan Rattan
Himalayan rattan originated in northeast India, specifically in the Himalayan Mountains. This plant, belonging to the Plectocomia genus, is a high-climbing palm that can reach heights of up to 80 feet. It possesses exceptional weather resistance, able to endure frigid temperatures and even snow.
Despite being one of the most ornamental rattan palms, Himalayan rattan is rarely utilized for furniture due to its soft pith. However, it finds application in creating Himalayan 'singing bowls,' where rattan wands of varying densities are employed to produce different tones and sounds.
5. Manau Rattan
Manau rattan is highly coveted for its exceptional durability and strength. Originating from the Calamus genus, it is one of the most commonly utilized types of rattan in commercial production. Manau can be found in various regions, including Africa, India, Sri Lanka, China, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
Primarily employed in the crafting of rattan furniture and handicrafts, Manau rattan also holds historical significance as a material for weapons, particularly in hand-to-hand combat martial arts.
